Melissa Perez here, just writing about what ideas do you guys have on option #2 for the essay? I like the idea of since there is only three of us writing about this topic maybe each one do it in diffrent cities around yakima valley of course and compare and contrast each city. do you guys have more ideas?
I'm writing about the first essay option. I'm curious as to what everyone's opinions are concerning minimum wage so I can get a good look at all sides of the issue. Anyone care to share?
I chose to write about essay topic #1. I feel that minimum wage is an important subject and one that I doubt will ever be at amount that will satisfy a majority of people. To increase minimum wage would be great, BUT the more it is increased the closer it gets to the amount that people are making who have degrees in certain areas or skilled for a certain job. I think that there should be a minimum wage, but then based on your skills, number of years at a job, amount of schooling, etc then you should get paid more. There are some jobs that no matter how long you work there you never get a pay raise or if you do it is minimal. So I think mimimum wage should be increased but not by much, and from there it should be based on qualifications and that certain job.
I was thinking about things a poor person can do to help themselves out or poverty, and one thing thing that Erenriech doesnt do is get assistance from state programs like DSHS. For one reason is that she cant becuase she is really a high paid journalist and that would be fraud, but the fact that she doesnt do it makes her attempts at surviving harder than it is for alot of others truly in her situation. A person who is truly trying to survive on min wage can get food stamps and that would save at least a hundred bucks a month for a single person. A person with children on a low income can get medical for their children and even themselves. You can get day care paid for. I am too tired to go on.
So I have good supporting sites to do option on on the essay. I've got lots of good facts, but needless to say I still can't seem to put a paper together. Well, I could. I just don't know where to start. My "picked" dog is that minimum wage should increase and be set, but how would you determine what the perfect number for minimum wage would be? -KKayL
So I am having some issues on where to start my essay, mainly because I can't put it in a specific topic area. I was thinking that writing about the psychological effects of poverty on people. There are so many examples in the book, and so may factors that play into peoples thoughts and emotions. But I picked a topic that I am very interested in. I am excited to write this essay, but have so many ideas, I really don't know where to begin.
essay number 1 Living/Minimum Wage is an important debate, because we are talking about people that do not have good job and besides that, they do not pay well.
I'm think of doing option five. I feel that education is the best way out of poverty. I see a lot of social services that are there to help sustain the poor, but not very many that are there to help them get out of poverty.
Personnally i am disappointed in this assignment because there are several very good choices to choose from and it was very difficult selecting the topic. But #1 is clearly a strong topic to argue, and i will have more insight into the counter arguement because many have chosen this topic allowing a large amount of opinions to come forth.

Oops having a last minute change of subjects! For the housing option are we supposed to use min wage before or after taxes? How do we find after tax?
