Culture and Poverty

Here's an article K. Cleveringa found on the topic. Quotes from a New Republic article (which is a legit source).

And incredibly, it combines the Expert Performance Movement we talked about in child soccer and the number and type of words addressed to children in differing economic levels.

And, be sure to read the readers' comment section for some good back and forth. I'm not sure I agree with this guy's conclusions about when it all went wrong--and the numbers aren't there to back it up as far as church going is concerned.

I think he makes some logical points, but the conclusions he draws from them are kind of a thin. It would be interesting if we had some more time in the quarter to talk about the role of religion society, and how it could be part of the solution to class inequality. (Or the problem if you see it that way.)

He really did have some good points but then it turns into a ramble wuith less and less evidence and more opinions.... but still worth looking at.

Wow this was great until he started talking about church. What these people need are not good Priests...They need good Education.

I strongly agree with this article in general. The Bible distinctly speaks of saving sex until marriage, and as we saw in Class Matters, a large part of what held Angela back was her children and their expenses. John, I do agree with you that education is a fundamental key for this dilemma, I think a priest could help the situation as well.

This guy does have a few good points but the closer you get to the end the more iffy it gets. And what's wrong with a priest, hmm?

Religion and politics are just so hard to establish when combined together. I agree with the need for education to be pushed, but I respect those who lean for spiritual guidance as well.
