Colbert on Copyright

Here's a guy named Lawrence Lessig that wants to do away with copyright laws.
It's all part of what Friedman calls "The Great Sorting Out"
And here's the remix.

And here's a debate about Obama's campaign poster on Colbert.
The AP took the photo, but did the artist steal it for his poster?
Or is he "sampling" it?

I agree with the idea that copyrights can be ridiculous, but there still ought to be some way for artists to protect their work.

Lessig in the first video: "I want a congress that focuses on real issues, not these idiot issues that are not really causing any problems at all." I like this guy.

The fact that the remix of the interview hit the web in less than 24 hours did not surprise me one bit! I agree with Alyssa, Artists need some kind of protection of their songs, or the remixes would easily become more popular than the actual songs!

Generally, I think that remixing is okay as long as you're creating you're new piece. However, I've heard a song where the remix was so popular, the original song was almost rare to find, the other one became so big. So yes, artists need more protection, but it's hard to stop people from doing it.

copyrights are important although sometimes they seem a bit overdone, people need to be able to take credit for their work, and if a profit is being made they should be benefiting in someway. Remixs are a tricky way around this I suppose, maybe the artist needs to give permission for remixs

I agree with Alyssa. Copyrights get annoying, but if it wasn't for them, no one would ever do their own work

I agree with Tierra and Alyssa. We need copyright or else someone would be stealing my wonder piece of art that i have laying around my Casa..Lol. Jk.
but we need to protect our work and privacy.

I agree with Colbert, that copyright rules should stay as is, they make someones work their own. But the remix of his video is really funny! I never really watch The Colbert Report but he is a really funny guy, he also opened at the Grammys and was histerical!

This clip was hilarious! Corbert is so funny! Its true that copyrights can be stupid but he does have a point because if i made something super cool i would want to copyright it so no one could take it.

This is completely retarded argument to begin with. The truth obviously lies somewhere in between, but i'm not going to major in a related area and spend my entire life trying to solve the issue.

I think if I was an artist of some kind, I would rather give people easy access to my material then not let them see it at all unless they want to pay me.

The idea that copyrights can be ridiculous is true. No one should be able to take credit for someone elses work, regardless.

I went to the seminar on copyright laws and they can be pretty harsh. But I agree with Alyssa that people do need their work protected.

Copyrights are there for a reason, BUT i think in the case of the obama picture it served a purpose and was changed enough that i dont think its the original picture. I also think that Copyrights are a sole American idea, ask any Chinese company about copyrights, and patients, espeically in the automobile and software industry.

Copyrights are like way too much now... It seems like there is a copyright on everything now but i do understand why. If someone had their own idea and did something its not fair for someone else to steal it!
