Education Articles

UW has a program started by a former student of mine that fits in this conversation well. It's called the "Dream Project"--she started it as her senior project and it's now her doctoral work. It matches UW students as mentors to low income high school students. And it's really working.

Central raising tuition again. The president says those hurt the most are in the middle class.

How are we going to possibly be able to compete with globalization if we can't afford to get an education. The last place they should be cutting funding is in education.

They should not be cutting funding i agree with Adeana there, how is it possible that a person can make to little money to pay for everything their self but to much money to get help, there has to be a happy medium somewhere. College kids need government assistance, I think Centrals cuts are going to hit the Yakima Valley harder then people realize

I agree. Cutting education is ridiculous. People are always saying, we are educating our future, but with cuts like this, we are creating less of a bright future. Centrals cuts will definitely hit Yakima hard.

Well, as already mentioned by my classmates, cutting the funds for education is definitely not the route this country should be taken in its current situation. Especially taking into consideration, how the public education system simply is not doing enough to prepare enough adolescents for what lies in this new flat world of ours. Instead of preparing kids today for the future lying ahead of us, we are basically setting them up for failure in a flat world controlled by the elite because in cutting funds for education, we are making possible for only the top 10 percent of the population to attend school. In doing this we are leaving America's middle class out to dry, a class which has been the foundation for this country.

I agree with everyone who commented on this, Adeana, we dont want our education too be cut, that would be ridicolous.:(

I strongly agree... Education should be the last thing to be cut. We need our education to thrive in the flat world. where would we be without it?

How can they expect us to keep up with costs if they first make us pay more to get into the college and then cut our financial aid? We can't afford both of those changes. They need to either stop raising tuition or stop cutting financial aid.

With the 500% rise in tuition costs in the last three decades, Mobility is only becoming more difficult. Soon enough, people will only be ably to go to college of they are very rich!

If they continue to cut funding and continue to raise tuition in schools how is anyone supposed to make it through? I can barely make it through school as it is. Employers aren't willing to pay people a living wage that is high enough to take care of a person. Working sixteen hours a week making minimum wage while going to college and paying for most of it on your own, yeah, you're screwed if you're that person.

The cost of education is expensive. How are we suppose to promote it, if all we do is cut funding for education. When there needs to be cuts, education is the first thing to be cut off with or limited to.

I have no clue how they expect anyone to keep going to school when they keep cutting funding and rising the cost of tuition. I agree with Adeana "the last place they should be cutting funding is in education." Cant they make cuts somewhere else?

Joe raises a great point. This really is turning into a middle class killer though in terms of getting an education. I do not qualify for financial aid and next year moving on to a college that costs as much as my yearly salary is going to hurt, especially since one of my goals is to stay out of debt.

Its sad that they didnt freeze the salaries, and instead of trimming pork out of the system they choose to make us pay more. It hit home when Peters said that we are now paying about half of our tuition, where the state once paid most of it. We will only be hurt by this in the long run.
