A Star is Made

From the Freakonomics team, "A Star is Made"
Here's another column about it.

Here's one about children doing well in school based on early attachments.

I think that although stars are made and not born as stated in the article there is a level which talent can put you through things. Being a sports fan I know that you have a lot of NFL possible draftees who are said to have a lot of upside and are still very raw. This means that they still might get paid the big first round bucks even though they may not as polished or put in as much time as other candidates. I am not saying that practice does make perfect but also you have to think that some people might be more apt to succeed than others.

My dad always said Michael Jordan got cut from his high school basketball team, which to him meant we were all capable of greatness... maybe he was always right

This article was really interesting! I like how the quote a star is born was changed to a star is made. It kinda gave a me a small shadow of hope that if you practice enough and have the drive for something you love you can achieve it and it wont be just given to the ones with talent.

Yes, i think stars CAN be make, but there are always the people who possess natural talent, or innate advantages - like tall people playing basketball, or people with long legs that allow them no run faster.

I think stars can be made and can be born. I mean hardwork, dedication, and practice will almost always get you somewhere. But what if your born into a family where everyone in the past (dead and Present) were all stars. Its not certain but sometimes just the atmoshphere your raised in will have something to do with if you become a star or not. I really want to read this book Freakonmics now.

Stars can be made, but other will have a head start for they are born with a "natural ability" to perform great in a variety of sports. It might take a lot of time and practice but it is worthwile to put in all the effort to be star quality.

This article is very interesting. It is also inspiring to those of us who always thought we couldn't do something cause we weren't born with certain skills.

I have always agreed with the information this article gives although i have noticed that throughout high school, i ran cross country and trained far more than one of my fellow runners, but he beat me during a race. There must be a level at which natural talent and the building of a star meet.

People have to learn to be Stars, all though some are natuarally talented i Say...But practice makes Perfect.

It seems being good at something involves a mixture of working hard and initial talent one posses for the task. Its interesting to think about though.

I agree that stars are made into stars, they arent born a star. You see many athletes who have children but their children arent stars like their parents. Being a star is from determination and motivation. Hard work can get anyone, anywhere.

I also agree with Joe on this one some people, especially in sports, just have the upperhand and there is really nothing that can be done to overcome that gap.

Practice makes perfect, although i think people who have a nack for something, have the patience for it, and at some level, natual tallent just plays a part into things. I also think that things also happen by chance, jackson polocks paintings were something that happend due to a quarrel or loss of a girlfriend, and now those paintings are worth thousands, and he is famous for his "moods" :).

I think this is crazy. That supposedly you have more of a chance at being a star soccer player if you were born in the beggining of every year. I believe it is just your anbtitiona dn go getter mentality that helps you to become great. Some are born with it and some have to work for it!
