Tent City

For those who've read The Grape of Wrath, there's a new one in Sacramento

300 people living in a tent community. That is something you expect to see in a third world country. They said even Seattle has a tent community growing. Life can change so fast. I wonder how I would handle it. I would like to think I could do it gracefully but actually experiencing it is a different story.

I totally agree with you Maryn. We really dont know how to react until it actually happens to us. Living in a tent is a horrible thing. Nobody would of guessed that the reporters were talking about a city in the United States. Slowly this is becoming a greater issue than yesterday. What will happen in the summer when temperatures are at 100? For us this has not really hit us yet and hopefully it will stay away from us.

I've read the "Grapes of Wrath" several time for a few different English classes, and I have to say I believe it should be mandatory reading for anyone who wants to run for any kind of government job for he tent city reason alone. It's criminal for the US government to let it get that bad sheesh!!!

That's so sad. I can't believe the economy is getting so bad. It makes me worry about what's going to happen next.

This is really sad to see. Soon if things dont chance we will be seeing this all around us. Maybe if i dont get a job soon i will be living in a tent. I really cant believe that 300 people and counting are living in this community.

This sort of thing makes me nervous, i don't have reason to believe that i will lose my job, but still, it could happen...and then what would happen to me? my bigger concern is my mom, who is still raising my little brothers, or my grandparents who have medical bills. we can't find ourselves living in tents on the outskirts of Yakima, but, you never know. its so true that in just one day your whole life can come crashing down.

It must be really hard for those people. Hopefully the money that is going to Sacramento from the government will help the leaders create more shelters or places that the homeless can live in that are sanitary. I can't imagine living in a tent permanently.

That's crazy I can't even imagine living in a tent community, I mean i hate the cold weather when i'm indoors i cant even imagine sleeping outside in the rain and cold weather. I'm just thankful nothing like this has happened to my family or friends and i hope that those 300 people end up finding real places to live instead of tents

I can't even begin to imagine living in a tent community. What has this world come to. We need to do something and do something fast.

Yeah it all seems unimaginable, until things like this come about that force us to do just that-imagine. Imagine you, your family, sinking this far. The realtiy is not many of us if any at all may face this disasterous of consequences. But it does give me a little push to do my part-charity, conserving, whatever can help.

I couldn't imagine not being able to come home to a nice warm bed and a hot shower every night. I feel really bad for those people.

It is not exactly what we like to think of when we think of America. I do feel sorry for those people, but why do people blame the US government for a world-wide recession?

I think that living in a tent would be like a cool camping trip feeling for a couple of days, but then the excitement would soon wear off. Here is a question, how many of those people if they worked hard and never gave up could end up in the middle class? Is it possible that the laziness of America has resulted in this or is the economy and government all to blame?

i can't believe this is happening. i bet the older generation is having a sense of de javu here. this has got to be scary for those who are actually living in those tents.
