Ambition and college costs

UW has a program started by a former student of mine that fits in this conversation well. It's called the "Dream Project"--she started it as her senior project and it's now her doctoral work. It matches UW students as mentors to low income high school students. And it's really working.

Central raising tuition again. The president says those hurt the most are in the middle class.

Raising the cost is not helping us... its just making is hard for working class people get there kids into college... we need more college graduates... we need to find away to make college cheaper

I've been researching where I want to transfer to and I've found that Central is by far the most expensive at similar universities around the northwest. I would definitely say that it is playing a big factor in whether I attend there or at some other university outside of the state.

This article is very interesting to me personally. I know several people who are employed by Central and when I hear about how many coffee breaks they take and how long their lunch is..I want to ask...Why do tuition rates need to be raised when there is a lot of wasted time in several departments? I think if a closer look were taken, adjustments could be made elsewhere which would reduce the raising tuition costs.

Thats so cool that she was your former student and her idea went so far. I also feel this program will really work. Students in highschool will have someone to look up to and help them. I don't know any stats for how this is working so far but i bet we will see a huge increase in student output, grades and test scores.
