These two men describe my dad. He worked most of my life for Western RV. When they shut their doors I did not know if he would be able to get another job. He took some college but did not get a degree. Luckily he had played with a cad program and that is what got him his new job. It is hard times for older people with out degrees

I swear I seen these slide shows before. I think it was last quarter. Ya it was last quarter. It is sad and I know a few people in my life that are in the same situation as the two men in the slide show. It was easier back in the day where a degree didn't count as much as it does now.

Reminds me of Boise Cascade and some of the people I know who had to start over. One Tough situation I hope I never have to be in.

it is nearly impossible to start over when your in that position it just crushes your soul. you may of lost half your pay check , and you know you will never get it back.

I think Angela Whitiker’s story is very interesting. She had so many obstacles in life and nothing going for her. It takes a very strong determined person to do what she did. She defiantly has beaten the odds. I also think college is very important and the college Dropout Boom proves that.

I couldn’t believe that 1/5 Americans drops out of college. I don’t understand how they cannot see the importance of getting a degree. It is definitely a necessity to succeed in our current society.

I'm not really suprised by the 1 in 5 statistic about dropping out of college. its sad yes, but people tend to live in the here and now, without much regard for the tomorrows, so they get caught up in something now thats working well for them, and then it seems like a better plan than going to school because they are trying to survive today, not worrying about tomorrow. i know ppl like this. but like i was just reading in the human capital articles, these things tend to start in the home, as children. and the reform is necessary to get these stats changed.

I was thinking the same thing Brianna. There are a lot of people who never think about the future. they live in the here and now, at the spur of the moment and make one or two mistakes that screw them over for the rest of their lives. Personally, I know a lot of people that are in this same exact situation. They didn't g to college, because they thought they could get a job and not have to worry about the debt of college. Now they have multiple kids and are working dead end jobs. They shop at stores like goodwill and salvation army, and they drive a car that they bought for $10 from a fellow church member who knew they needed a helping hand and a new car. I'm sure a lot would be different if they were looking to the future and realized what life was going to end up like without an education.

I liked watching the video. It made today's current job situation more real. This is really happening. The new unemployment rate for Washington State is 7.8% which is higher than the national unemployment rate by 0.2%.

I do believe that people know the importance of education and achieving a college degree. Sometimes it is just harder than reading it on paper. Unlike Angela, the men had a taste of success and due to our unstable economy lost all they worked for, while Angela had just always dreamed of achieving a dream of success. Mostly, people should really try to focus on their family and actions if they feel like they cannot change anything else.

I feel so bad for those who are losing their jobs in this tough time. So many in the old days didn't need an education to make good money as was displayed in the slide show, but now these jobs are being eliminated by machinery, outsourcing, or just bankruptcy of the company. all these people have ever know is this job, and now there's nothing out there for them. It's tough to say what a solution would be, but i know that outsourcing could and should be regulated.

Honestly a degree shouldn't be hard for these two men to get. If they are as hard working as they seem to be, perhaps they could do it in half the time as most. Although I've always felt that the key to financial success is to stay single and childless.

Dave I so agree that a key to being successful is to stay single and childless. No worries about anyone else...I think it's because I am the only child...no offense to anyone that isnt these things but the most positive moments I have had was when I was single and being with my best friends. It just shows that the people that have children or taken have to work ten times harder than those who aren't.

Yeah it was a bummer for those people that they lost their jobs, but they should have gone to college in the first place.

its no longer about just what you know and how you work, everyone wants that little piece of paper saying youve been to school for you. school doesnt make everyone better at a trade, its how and if you use the material. my dad barely finished high school but he is one of the best foreman i know. he built my house, built many of our families homes, most schools in this valley, many of the movie theaters, and different odds and ends at the fair grounds, he knows his stuff.

Kalya how do you justify your comment, maybe they did try and couldnt afford it or they had life choices that were unavoidable and coulnt attend college. College isnt for everyone, we do need people to work minimum wage jobs and they should be treated fairly even if they were not able to attend an institution!
